Statement on the 23rd Anniversary of the 8888 People's Power Movement for Democracy in Burma

Statement on the 23rd Anniversary of the 8888 People's Power Movement for Democracy in Burma

The “8888 Uprising” is the largest ever national Burmese uprising representing all walks of life, which toppled down the one party military dictatorship regime that ruled the country through brutality and oppression. Until today, Burmese citizens look to the 8888 Uprising as a spiritual guidance that guides and leads Burmese citizen to stand for freedom, justice, democracy, and human rights for all Burmese citizens. Today marks the 23rd Anniversary of the 8888 People's Power Movement, we wonderfully feel the great power given by the 8888 Uprising and are very thankful to it. However, the tasks to completely terminate the military dictatorship system and to reestablish federal union that is based on democracy, human rights, and equality are not completed yet.

We believe that the will and the best interest of majority of people in Burma will not be accomplished as long as the military dictatorship system exists in the country. Therefore our main task given by the 8888 Uprising is to bring to an end any existing forms of military dictatorship system in the country.

Therefore, our sole responsibility today is to uncover sufferings Burmese citizens and anguishes of lack of their rights in every aspect in term of politics, economic, social, education, religion, and cultures and report them to public with the aim that we will be able to educate and organize Burmese citizens who launch another national uprising like 8888 Uprising.

Therefore, we, all ethnic groups and oppositions, need to stand together on our intensive work of unity, peace, justice, and democracy and work for the establishment of genuine unity. By doing so, we will be able to protect ourselves from the military regime's counter-revolutionary activities aiming to destroy the unity between ethnic nationalities and democracy forces, and eliminating political forces in the country.

Today's urgent task to establishing genuine unity among us so will also bring about the followings:
• The immediately release all other political prisoners who were detained for their political belief
• The end of civil war and establishment of peace in the country
• Dialogue between the military regime and Mrs. Aung San Suu Kyi that will solve problems facing the country
On this special occasion of the 23rd Anniversary of the 8888 People's Power Movement for Democracy in Burma, we humbly salutes, commemorate, and mark the thousands of martyrs including monks, women, students, workers, farmers and people from all walks of life in Burma who sacrificed their lives, blood and sweat during the 8888 nation-wide people’s movement for Democracy in their mother land and those daring political prisoners in prisons throughout Burma who faithfully continue the unfinished task for establishing democracy and peace in Burma and fight against the military dictatorship system.
We would like to faithfully honor to the fallen heroes and the spirit of ‘88 which is "to take power stolen by the military regime back into the hands of Burmese citizens." We swore an oath that we will never cease from fighting till the victory we win.

Long live the spirit of the 8888 martyrs!
